Last Updated Jan. 6, 2015: One in 17 Florida students attended a charter school in 2012, a number that has increased almost six-fold in a decade, according to StateImpact Florida. The state authorized the first charter school in 1996, and now there are more than 570 operated by private nonprofit and for-profit companies with enrollment of 203,000 students.
