Legislators In The News

Sixty days of debate, argument, agreement and compromise end with the drop of two handkerchiefs in the Capitol rotunda to signal the completion of the 2013 legislative session.
House Democrats say they are not going to drop the fight to extend health care coverage once the session ends. They are calling on the governor to veto sections of the budget, call a special session and commission a study to address issues raised by House Republicans.
U.S. Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz says GOP lawmakers are acting like "spoiled children" who are bent on stopping Medicaid expansion even though the issue has been decided by Congress, court and voters.
The former Speaker and current Senator thinks it's best for lawmakers to take a timeout on expanding health care coverage and let staff work on the issue after session. However, House Democrats will continue a protest slowing down the House's work until the House agrees to take up a Senate bill expanding coverage to a million residents.
The feel-good nature of the session came to a grinding halt Tuesday as House Democrats used stall tactics to highlight the rejection of a plan to use federal money to provide health care to 1 million Floridians. Other top priorities of House and Senate leaders are dying or are being stalled in the session's final days.
The governor wants to access billions of dollars of federal money to reduce the number of Floridians without even basic health insurance. The Senate has a plan. The House refuses to accept the money. Rep. Perry Thurston says, "It's time for people to chime in."
The Pasco County Republican is bucking House leadership and will propose amending the House health care plan to closely resemble a Senate proposal. It would draw down billions of federal dollars, a funding scheme the House has rejected. "Fasano is an unusual guy. He's a hybrid," said Rep. Elaine Schwartz, D-Hollywood.
