CFO Jeff Atwater says SB 464 will enable the state's unclaimed-property office to greatly speed return of money in forgotten bank accounts and other assets.
Sen. Simmons and Rep. Precourt combined their proposals to pre-empt local labor ordinances into one bill. It would preempt local regulations on mandatory employee benefits, including sick leave, but not living-wage ordinances in Miami-Dade and Broward counties.
This week we learned that House Speaker Will Weatherford says if state employee pension changes aren't approved this year, they will come back again, and that Gov. Rick Scott is on the lookout for lawmakers' special projects as he advocates for his priorities.
Even with the first projected surplus in three years, lawmakers are not in a hurry to pass large tax breaks as they were in recent years.
The bill preempts local labor ordinances and would limit damages to the actual wages owed. Opponents say by prohibiting recovery of attorney fees it makes it impossible for low wage workers to file suit.
