Ban in 2016 on septic tank waste disposal now looming as bills fail to pass

The Legislature's failure to pass a bill pushing back a deadline involving the disposal of septic tank pump-out waste increases the need to deal with the issue next year, activists and legislators involved in the issue say.

The Legislature in 2010 approved a Jan. 1, 2016 ban on spreading septic tank waste over land by firms that pump out some of the state's 2.6 million septic tanks. SB 550 was dubbed a springs protection bill by some supporters who say the waste poses a threat to streams, rivers and groundwater.
