Senate approves marijuana bill for epileptic seizures

The Florida Senate voted Monday to let doctors prescribe a "non-euphoric" strain of marijuana that has shown promise in treating children with intractable epileptic seizures.

Three of the chamber's most conservative Republicans -- Sens. Jeff Brandes of St. Petersburg, Aaron Bean of Jacksonville and Rob Bradley of Orange Park -- joined in sponsoring the bill (SB 1030). The men emphasized that they are opposed to legalization of marijuana and that the bill sent to the House in a 36-3 bill has nothing to do with a constitutional amendment on the November ballot, which would permit medical use of smokable marijuana.
