Senate waters down school vouchers bill for disabled students; passes another committee

A bill that would offer school vouchers for students with disabilities was changed on Wednesday into a program that would instead give scholarships for extra educational programs and therapy.

On Wednesday, the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Education voted 11-1 in favor of SB 1512, which originally contained language that would allow parents to use state education dollars for private school or tutoring. However, an amendment filed by Sen. Aaron Bean, R-Jacksonville, rewrote much of the bill to offer financial support for students in public, private or home school.
