Scott to skip trip to Dominican Republic after pressure from Haitian-American group

Gov. Rick Scott will not lead a trade mission to the Dominican Republic when it leaves Sunday after a Haitian-American group urged him to cancel the mission altogether.

The Haitian-American Professionals Association sent a letter to Scott Jan. 5 asking him to cancel the trip because of the Dominican Republic’s recent high court ruling revoking citizenship from the children of immigrants from neighboring Haiti, affecting about 210,000 people. Human rights activists say the decision is contrary to international law and leaves immigrants in limbo, possibly forcing them to return to Haiti with little hope of finding work or making a living.
