Sale of state hospital could boost conservation land buying, if Legislature approves

An offer to buy a closed state hospital site in Palm Beach County could boost conservation land buying, a Florida Department of Environmental Protection spokesman said Thursday.

The department's efforts since July to identify conservation land that can be sold as surplus has faced widespread criticism. Gov. Rick Scott's 2014-15 budget request, unveiled Wednesday, includes for $30 million in new revenue for the Florida Forever program plus $40 million from the sale of nonconservation lands.
