Fee-hike history could haunt hopefuls' campaigns

Key state lawmakers want to make your next trip to the DMV less costly -- if not less aggravating -- than they made it five years ago.

House and Senate leaders are seeking to cut fees for motor vehicle registration and for drivers’ licenses, raised by the Legislature in 2009 as a way to paper over a large budget deficit. The cost to get a new license went from $27 to $48, the price of a renewal license increased from $20 to $48, and vehicle registration fees jumped from $100 to $225.
