Unemployment system closing for 5 days amid transition

Jobless workers will be unable to apply for unemployment benefits for five days beginning Wednesday at noon as the state moves to an updated system to handle claims.

The Department of Economic Opportunity, the state agency overseeing the system, sent letters to claimants telling them to apply for weekly benefits ahead of the change. The agency has also added 100 staff members to its current telephone bank of 265 workers in anticipation of higher call volumes to answer questions about the switch. Lawmakers in recent years have required unemployed workers to apply for benefits online.
