State leaders look to feds to prevent National Guard furloughs

Florida elected officials are looking to Washington for help to prevent furloughs to the Florida National Guard they fear will hamper hurricane preparation and clean-up efforts.

Gov. Rick Scott, speaking at a news conference to discuss Tropical Storm Andrea preparation, also chided President Barack Obama for the federal sequestration cuts that led to the furlough plan. About 1,000 Florida National Guardsmen are set to be furloughed for one day per week starting on July 8.
