Last updated Sept. 24, 2014: Since 2008, projected energy demands have fallen. Coal and nuclear plants have been delayed or scrapped. Calls for energy diversity have been muted by falling natural gas prices. Utilities say they will build renewable energy if they are allowed to charge more. But legislation in 2010 allowing such increases failed amid opposition from consumer groups.
