Florida’s reliance on fuel taxes to pay for transportation is unsustainable as vehicle fleets become more fuel efficient, cars travel farther with less gas and the state reaps less revenue.
That’s what members of the Senate Transportation Committee heard Thursday from Department of Transportation Secretary Ananth Prasad. He said the situation isn’t dire, but Florida will need to bring in more revenue over time as cars become more efficient and a growing number of residents and visitors flock to the state.
