Hate crimes down, but assaults are up

The number of hate crimes reported in Florida in 2011 dropped but the number of physical assaults increased, according to the 2011 Hate Crime in Florida Report released by Attorney General Pam Bondi.

There were 139 hate crimes reported by 58 law enforcement agencies to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement between Jan. 1 and Dec. 31, 2011. The annual report documents a 27 percent decline in the number of hate crimes in the state since 2007 when 193 incidents were reported as motivated by an expression of hatred towards the victim’s race, ethnicity, religion, gender, age, disability or sexual orientation.
