Florida prosecutors and public defenders can't keep over-worked young lawyers very long without at least a break-even pay raise to offset the state's 3 percent pension deduction, lawyers told state budget planners at a public hearing Wednesday.
During a public-safety segment of the annual review of agency budget requests, the state prison system made a plea to improve officer safety in a few ways -- including filling vacancies that have stretched staffing levels in some prisons. And the Florida Department of Law Enforcement requested added funding to expand electronic surveillance support for city and county police investigations, to upgrade and replace some investigative tools and to expand its DNA analysis capacity.
