Biomass energy supporters on Tuesday heralded a ceremonial groundbreaking for an electric generating plant in Gainesville that once built could be the largest in the United States.
The Gainesville Renewable Energy Center LLC will produce 100 megawatts of power, enough for 70,000 homes. It's the first of a new generation of biomass energy plants to move forward with construction since a push began in 2008.
